Every first and third Saturday of the month, the Galena Creek Visitor Center hosts guided hikes along one of the regional park trails in the area. Located in the Galena Forest in southeast Reno, this center is perfectly located to be a hub of activity in all four seasons in Northern Nevada.
Join a Naturalist for one of these guided hikes for a simple $5 donation. During the winter, this program can turn into a snowshoe hike! They have a limited number of snowshoes available for rent at the visitor center, and you are always welcome to bring your own. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, hiking boots/shoes, and a readiness to learn. They also encourage calling ahead to confirm the hike just in case of any inclement weather.
Some other great events you can enjoy at the Galena Creek Visitor Center:
STORIES IN THE SNOW – Sunday, November 24th at 2pm
Join Meghan Collins, Research Scientist with the Desert Research Institute (DRI), for a scientific adventure exploring an exciting and unique approach to the science of snow. Stories in the Snow is a citizen science project at the Desert Research Institute that involves taking pictures of freshly-fallen snow crystals with a smartphone. In the last three years, the network of citizen scientists in the Tahoe Basin and Truckee River watershed has grown to hundreds of students and community members. Come hear about the science of snow crystal formation, see snow crystal pictures submitted by people throughout our region, and understand how the images are used to better understand winter weather of the Sierra Nevada.
