American Impressionism | A Historical Art-Form

In my experience as a real estate agent, staging a home is truly a type of art. Having a creative eye for certain colors, textures and materials that mesh together requires a specific skillset and talent.

Just as much as I appreciate interior design, I’m also a history enthusiast at heart. As a member of the Nevada Museum of Art, I recently attended a lecture with Scott Schweigert on American Impressionism and was fascinated by what I learned. I discovered more about the transformation of some of the classically trained artists and how they began in the impressionist style during the mid – late 1800’s. Please join me today on the blog for more insights from the Artown American Impressionism Exhibit and keep an eye out for a special giveaway!

So, What is American Impressionism? The History Behind the Art

American Impressionism is a style of art that is characterized by light, flowing brushwork and vibrant colors. This particular art style originated as European Impressionism and resurfaced in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The art colonies in America that formed due to this movement were really interesting. The American Impressionists were gifted artists; many of them went overseas to train and share with the masters.

During this time, American Impressionist painters would gather in scenic areas where they would recreate their surroundings as artwork. These places were generally where the painters found inspiration, where they could live affordably and where it was close enough to people that would purchase their work.

The pieces I found to be the most interesting were the pieces from some of the most well-known cities in the United States as they looked at the turn of the 20th century. It provides a whole new perspective on how the country has changed.
